May 11th Summer Jobs Fair to Match Employers and Student

WHAT: Mayor Martin O’Malley will host some of the area’s largest employers this Thursday at Baltimore’s first ever Summer Jobs Fair for Youth. 28 businesses will interview and hire over 300 pre-registered young people onsite for summer jobs, paying anywhere from minimum wage to $15.00 per hour. The Jobs Fair is part of the Mayor’s YouthWorks 2000 effort to match over 4,000 young people this summer with jobs, despite reduced federal summer employment funding.

WHEN: Thursday, May 11, 2000. 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
War Memorial Building (110 North Gay Street)

WHO: Participating businesses include Abacus Corporation, Aramark, Baltimore City Health Department, Baltimore Country Club, Baltimore Sun Newspaper, Baltimore Gas & Electric Home, Constellation Energy Group, Census 2000, General Cinemas, Homefix Corporation, Lorien Frankford, Martin’s Caterers, Maryland Insurance Administration, MBNA, MCI WorldCom, Outward Bound, Pepsi Bottling Group, Ravenwoods. Roland Park Place, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Sodexho Marriott Services, Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation, Stop Shop & Save, Sylvan Learning Systems, Tyrone’s Chicken, and United Parcel Service.

Individual job matching will continue through June. Employers should call (410) 396-JOBS to place a job order or to sponsor a youth on a community work project. It only costs $800 to fund a position and all donations are welcome.
