Description: Several Iraqi labor commissioners, in the United States to study workforce and youth development initiatives, will visit Baltimore to explore Mayor’s Office of Employment Development (MOED) programs and observe a presentation of CitiStat.

In Baltimore, the Iraqi delegation will first tour MOED’s Eastside One-Stop Career Center. At this stop, the delegation will be introduced to the services of Baltimore’s network of career centers including their high-tech labs and Digital Learning Labs. Following the tour, the delegation will participate with MOED Director Karen Sitnick and agency staff in a lunchtime discussion of MOED’s creative strategies to serve the needs of Baltimore metropolitan area employers.

The delegation will next travel to City Hall for a presentation of CitiStat, Mayor Martin O'Malley's signature management initiative aimed at utilizing intensive performance measurement of all municipal agencies and achieving real-time sharing of data to bring about operational cost savings, revenue enhancements, and improvements in the quality of municipal services.

The delegation’s trip to Baltimore will conclude with a stop at MOED’s Westside Youth Opportunity Center, which is one of five locations that provide comprehensive services to increase the employability of youth in Baltimore’s Empowerment Zone neighborhoods.

Coordinated by the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. visit of the Iraqi labor officials began on Friday, October 17 and will conclude on Tuesday, October 28. In addition to the visit to Baltimore, this visit will include meetings with Department of Labor leaders, Pentagon officials and U.S. senators and tours of facilities in Washington, D.C. and Falls Church and Manassas, Virginia.

MOED coordinates and directs workforce development initiatives responsive to the needs of Baltimore City employers and job seekers. During its last fiscal year, MOED served 18,199 city residents through its One-Stop Career Centers, placed 5,755 city residents in jobs with an average hourly wage of $9.13, assisted 599 employers in recruiting workers, placed 5,498 city teens in summer jobs, and assisted 5,580 learners through its Digital Learning Labs.
