Background:
Race for Work is a feature of Mayor Sheila Dixon’s YouthWorks summer jobs campaign to raise money to help put teens to work. The YouthWorks program provides six-week employment opportunities for Baltimore City youth, ages 14 to 21. The Race for Work event encourages schools, students, neighbors, families, and friends to identify sponsors and run the 3-mile course through beautiful Druid Hill Park or participate in a 1-mile walk or fun run. Members of schools, families, running clubs, and corporations can participate individually or as teams. Schools are encouraged to enter at least one team per grade level. Teams are made up of four or more individuals and can be mixed with males and females.
The YouthWorks campaign has benefitted from Race for Work for the past three years by raising much-needed funds for Baltimore City’s summer jobs program. Mayor Dixon is the Honorary Chair and Senator Catherine Pugh is the Chairwoman of this year’s 4th Annual Race for Work event.

Mayor Dixon has made YouthWorks one of her top priorities for 2008. Thousands of students, ages 14-21, register for YouthWorks each year. Although the summer jobs registration deadline has past, the campaign is continuing to raise funds and identify jobs for Baltimore’s young people. YouthWorks summer jobs provide teens with marketable skills and career exposure, inspire educational excellence, and keep youth engaged in safe and productive activities. 

It costs $1,250 to support a young person in a six-week work experience. There is still time to show support for YouthWorks by making tax-deductible donations to:
