Baltimore Wins $500,000 Grant to Help Job Seekers Get Training

Five career centers provide skills training vouchers, job search technology and career coaching for area residents.

BALTIMORE (April 4, 2000) Baltimore workers who seek job training will have a greater range of choices with better information about organizations that provide training, thanks to a new $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. Baltimore’s Office of Employment Development (OED) is one of 13 agencies recently selected nationwide to implement a new training demonstration program launched by the labor department.

The purpose of the grant is to establish individual training accounts (ITAs) for job seekers, and to develop a roster of eligible training providers with consumer information about their services. The program is also intended to test innovative ways of providing re-employment assistance and training for eligible workers. As an award winner, Baltimore will serve as a national learning laboratory for ITA implementation and will participate in national activities to identify and disseminate effective practices. The Department of Labor allocated $6.4 million for the initiative.

In Baltimore, job seekers access skills training vouchers through the Baltimore Career Center Network. Individuals looking for work can begin and end their job search at any one of five "one stop" employment centers managed or subcontracted* by OED. Centers are strategically located throughout the city and are augmented by nine neighborhood service centers and six empowerment zone village centers. Workshops, software tutorials, office equipment, GED preparation classes, job clubs and state-of-the art job search technology and other services are available for free to city residents at the following sites:
