YO! Baltimore provides comprehensive services for out-of-school youth, ages 16 to 22, who live in Baltimore City. This event celebrates 10 years of service with:

7,500
youth and young adults have been part of a positive community experience offering job training, academic support, life skills, cultural enrichment and a safe environment in which to grow and feel a strong sense of belonging

3,200
out-of-school youth became employed within one year of enrolling into the program

1,100 youth earned a high school diploma while participating in YO!

Baltimore, MD – Today, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake thanked Baltimore City’s Congressional Delegation for their support of the YouthWorks summer jobs program at a press conference at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. The delegation was successful in securing a Department of Labor grant of $575,000 that provides six-week summer jobs in high growth industries to Baltimore youth and young adults as part of YouthWorks new Baltimore Career Corps project.

Uptown Press, Genesis HealthCare, Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, and Good Samaritan Hospital are the regional organizations that are conducting these free and interactive forums.

Baltimore, MD - Mayor’s Office of Employment Development Director Karen Sitnick was elected president of the United States Conference of Mayors Workforce Development Council (WDC) at the organization’s 78th Winter Meeting last week in Washington D.C. Ms. Sitnick will lead the WDC for the next year and will continue the council’s efforts to provide a forum for Mayors and their employment and training administrators to examine all workforce development issues and to strengthen the ability of cities to meet the needs of their citizens; particularly economically disadvantaged individuals, those with serious skill deficiencies, dislocated workers, and others with special barriers to employment, including youth.

Baltimore, MD – The registration period for Baltimore City’s YouthWorks summer jobs program begins today for Baltimore City residents, ages 14-24. In order to be considered for a six-week summer job, interested youth and young adults must complete the YouthWorks registration form, which may be downloaded at www.oedworks.com, and bring it along with several required documents listed below to one of six recreation center registration locations before the March 12, 2010 deadline.

Baltimore, MD – In Baltimore City and more than 20 markets across the country, CVS Caremark is offering vouchers for free seasonal flu shots worth a total of $3 million to the unemployed. CVS Caremark has committed 2,500 vouchers to unemployed residents of Baltimore City.

The vouchers will be distributed through One-Stop Career Centers in Baltimore at the following locations:

Mondawmin Mall – Suite 302

Baltimore, MD - More than 75 workforce development professionals attended the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development’s (MOED) ARRA Partner Forum at the War Memorial Building this afternoon to learn details about training opportunities that will be offered to Baltimore City residents this fall. Funded through the city’s American Recovery And Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant, the trainings will cover an array of business industries, including healthcare, construction, bioscience and hospitality.

Baltimore, MD – Mayor Sheila Dixon was joined by Baltimore City Council members Rochelle “Rikki” Spector and Sharon Green Middleton to thank U.S. Senator Benjamin Cardin, Congressman Jon Sarbanes and other members of Baltimore’s Congressional Delegation for their support of close to 2,500 summer jobs for young people in Baltimore City. Included in those jobs is the Green Jobs Youth Corps – a partnership with the Department of Recreation and Parks – which provides six-week YouthWorks projects in “green” work areas such as horticulture, wildlife management and urban forestry.

Baltimore, MD – Mayor Sheila Dixon announced that the 2009 YouthWorks summer jobs campaign exceeded its goal of providing summer jobs to 6,500 Baltimore City young people. This year, more than 7,000 youth and young adults, ages 14-24, will be offered summer job opportunities in private sector and nonprofit locations throughout the city.

Baltimore, MD – The Academy for College and Career Exploration (ACCE) presented its second graduating class this evening at a ceremony on the campus of Johns Hopkins University. Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke gave remarks to the 56 graduates, their families, and ACCE faculty in attendance. All the graduates completed an individualized and rigorous academic curriculum that incorporated intensive career preparation experiences provided through the school’s many partnerships with higher education, business, and local government. The entire senior class applied to college and completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form.

Baltimore, MD - The Mayor’s Office of Employment Development is highlighting the achievements of nine Youth Opportunity (YO!) Baltimore alumni at a breakfast event Tuesday, March 25. These young adults represent the hundreds of YO! participants who have overcome significant barriers including periodic homelessness, substance abuse, grief, depression, lack of education, and unemployment.  After joining YO! Baltimore, they were given the support and provided the direction to make better decisions and benefit from  job training, education, and counseling services that have turned their lives around. The nine featured alumni have are now contributing positively to the community by being successfully employed and/or furthering their education.

Baltimore, MD - Senator Catherine Pugh will join more than two dozen Baltimore area coaches from middle and high schools, and colleges and universities at the Race for Work Coaches Breakfast on Monday January 28, 2008 at 7:00 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Inner Harbor located at 301 W. Lombard Street. The breakfast event is designed to support Baltimore City’s annual YouthWorks summer jobs campaign while recognizing the importance of physical fitness among area youth. Coaches will be asked to recruit and prepare students and their families to participate in this fund-raising effort.
