In addition, two ex-offenders will be recognized for their outstanding personal and professional achievement.

Chinese Labor Officials Visit Baltimore

Peer Mentoring Project Begins Second Year

What: A six-member delegation of labor officials from China will be visiting the United States on December 4 – 17, 2004, at the invitation of the U.S. Department of State and administered by the National Committee on United States-China Relations.

As part of the tour, the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development (MOED) in Baltimore City will host the Chinese delegation at its Eastside One-Stop Career Center to showcase best practices regarding workforce development, employee training and re-training, and public/private partnerships.

When: Tuesday, December 7, 2004, 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Media interviews will be scheduled from 11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at MOED’s Eastside One-Stop Career Center.

Baltimore, MD - The Mayor’s Office of Employment Development’s Youth Opportunity (YO!) initiative will host the kick-off banquet for the second year of its One 2 One Mentoring Program on Thursday, October 21, 2004 at the New Shiloh Baptist Church (2100 N. Monroe Street). Out-of-school youth who are successfully working in their career of choice or attending college serve as mentors for in-school youth who need support to make a successful transition into their future career pathways.

Mayor Visits ACCE, City’s Newest Innovation High School

Baltimore, MD – The Mayor’s Office of Employment Development’s Youth Opportunity Movement, in partnership with the Center for Poverty Solutions, announces the opening of two new food pantries – at the Westside and Historic East Baltimore Community Action Coalition (HEBCAC) Youth Opportunity Centers. These new pantries provide emergency food for community residents and program participants facing hunger and also provide training in nutrition and healthy meal preparation.

Description: Baltimore City schools have not yet opened, but since Monday, August 23,
2004, more than 120 students are gathering each day for an orientation to their new school, the Baltimore City Public School System’s newest innovation high school, The Academy for College and Career Exploration (ACCE). Developed and operated by the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development and the Sar Levitan Center of The Johns Hopkins University, Institute for Policy Studies, ACCE is opening this fall at 2500 E. Northern Parkway.ACCE is one of four innovation high schools in Baltimore City and is part of the city’s overall high school reform initiative.

The site features more than 500 low or no-cost human resource services provided by over 200 local nonprofit and public organizations.

Description: The Youth Opportunity (YO!) Baltimore Graduation Ceremony gives YO! members a chance to experience the graduation they never had. The youth participating in the graduation came to YO! as high school dropouts wanting to turn their lives around and receive their diplomas. This ceremony honors the achievements of the YO! graduating class of 2004. In addition, YO! will honor its first member to earn a bachelor’s degree, Chanie Carlton who graduated from Randolph Macon College in Virginia, and its second member to earn an associates degree, Ryant Cain.

Baltimore, MD – Out-of-school youth, ages 16 to 21, can register to earn GEDs, high school diplomas and occupational skills training at the Career Academy at Harbor City High School, 101 W. 24th Street. Through a new partnership with the Baltimore City Public School System and the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development, the Career Academy at Harbor City High School offers youth in Baltimore an expanded menu of learning options.

Academic Competition Meets Dropouts

Baltimore, MD – After registration for YouthWorks, Mayor Martin O’Malley’s summer jobs program, ended on May 28, 2004, organizers tallied that a record 7,000 youth had applied. Last year, YouthWorks, coordinated by the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development, provided 5,797 youth ages 14 to 21 with public and private sector job opportunities.

Baltimore, MD - The Mayor’s Office of Employment Development’s Youth Opportunity (YO!) initiative will host its first-ever academic tournament on Friday, May 21, 2004, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Life Sciences Building on the Liberty Campus of Baltimore City Community College. Through YO!, high school dropouts and youth at risk of dropping out are engaged in education, work-readiness and personal development activities. In this tournament, almost 80 YO! members will compete for honors in mathematics, geography, public speaking, spelling, social and dining etiquette, resume writing, job interview skills, computer literacy, photography, visual arts, music (composition and performance), creative writing and an open arts category. The top six academic winners of this local competition will represent Baltimore at this summer’s U.S. Department of Labor National Skills Competition in Washington, D.C.

Baltimore, MD – Through Maryland Business Works, computer, Internet, data and software-related companies, companies in other targeted industries and qualified small businesses (those with 50 employees or less) can receive grants to cover up to 50% of the cost of training their existing employees. In addition most businesses can apply for funding assistance to support IT-related training.

YouthWorks 2004 Seeks Funding and Summer Jobs
for Baltimore’s Youth

Baltimore, MD – Applications for Mayor Martin O’Malley’s YouthWorks summer jobs program are available now through May 28, 2004 for Baltimore City youth ages 14 to 21. This program, coordinated by the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development, connects youth to positions with area businesses, organizations and government agencies. The jobs pay at least minimum wage and generally last for at least six weeks. Last year, 5,797 youth were provided with job opportunities through YouthWorks. Students worked in myriad industries such as telecommunications, retail, law, and hospitality. Other participants operated their own businesses or attended special classes at participating colleges.

Baltimore, MD – Mayor Martin O’Malley’s YouthWorks program has secured employment opportunities for more than 5,500 Baltimore youth during each of the past two summers. Last year the program raised approximately $5 million. The drive to raise funding and jobs for summer 2004 began in the fall and recently intensified.

Baltimore, MD – The Mayor’s Office of Employment Development’s Youth Opportunity (YO!) initiative will host its annual Martin Luther King breakfast on Monday, January 19, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the City Temple Baptist Church (Eutaw and Dolphin Streets). More than 100 YO! members and staff will attend this event to hear Tanya Araya, project manager of the Teen Initiative at the House of Ruth, provide tips on ending domestic or relational violence. Following the breakfast, youth will participate in the Baltimore City Martin Luther King Day Parade by either riding on an anti-domestic violence float or handing out domestic violence information to parade spectators. YO! members created the float, which urges the public to “Close the Door on Violence. Open the Door to Freedom.”

Baltimore, MD – Youth Opportunity (YO!) Baltimore seeks caring adults to work with teens as coaches for an upcoming competition. The YO! Skills Challenge, which will begin in January 2004, brings together youth from YO! sites throughout the nation to compete in public speaking, writing college essays, language arts, math/budgeting, current events, career vocabulary, employment survival, employment interviewing and college interviewing. Volunteer coaches for Baltimore’s YO! Skills Challenge Team are asked to commit to two hours each week for two months and can work with individuals or small groups.

(the 2nd largest IT consulting company in Maryland), and MetroTech (a regional workforce development initiative that supports businesses in securing needed IT and biotechnology employees through customized training of dislocated workers).

Baltimore, MD – Youth Service America (YSA) today announced the selection of The Baltimore Youth Opportunity Movement (YO! Baltimore) as a lead agency for the 15th Annual National Youth Service Day, April 11-13, 2003. Fifty lead agencies across the country will coordinate local, regional, or statewide celebrations of National Youth Service Day, promoting projects and events, coordinating volunteer recruitment, local media outreach, and hands-on participation of elected officials.
